88 - The Great Balance by T. A. Davenport

This book is all about the journey.  We meet the strong, independent, business woman Briellyn who is trying to secure financing to take her design business to the next level.  In comes Eric, a gorgeous billionaire with a too good to be true offer.  The twist, no one is who they seem to be.  The story grows to one of good versus evil and the fate of the world stands in the balance.  Eric needs Briellyn and her special skills to help him stop evil but he might also need her on a more personal level.  The sexual tension keeps growing as they begin their search for the missing crystals.  This book is a unique take on the paranormal genre and draws us into this world making us eager to read the next book.

87 - The Tea Shop by Bernadette Marie

This book is a really sweet paranormal romance.  When Abigail Weston and Carson Stone meet, neither of them are interested in a serious relationship but fate seems to have other plans.  Everything is strained by Abigail’s unusual ability to see the future when she touches another person.  The main characters are so well-written they seem like real people we already know.  Their struggles and fights really strike home as they try to navigate their deepening relationship.  This book is very different from ones we normally read but it felt like coming home to something soft and cozy.  And while we didn’t get the explicit sex scenes we typically like, the relationship was so strong it felt like we did.

86 - Fire Me Up by Katie MacAlister

Aisling Grey is back and she is trying to find a Guardian mentor in Budapest without the help or interference of Drake, her Wyvern Mate.  Things rapidly start getting complicated as she finds Drake and all the Dragon Wyverns in town for a peace conference and staying at her same hotel.  Despite all her protests to the contrary, Aisling ends up striking a deal with Drake to commit to him if he lets her pursue her calling as a Guardian.  A whole cast of characters show up, including dozens of incubi, ghosts, and a professional virgin.  And many of our favorites from the first book return.  Just like the first one, the sex is mind-blowing.  The main trouble being, we don’t really know Drake or his personality, and neither does Aisling.  Aside from how sexy he is I can’t think of a good reason Aisling would be in love with Drake.  The book is an action-packed, wild ride but we are left in the same conundrum at the end: Aisling has walked away from Drake a second time, how can their relationship survive?

85 - Vengeance Executed by Zoey Indiana

We return to the dystopian romance of Zoey Indiana’s Vengeance trilogy.  This book continues the love story of Bash and Freya while they try to bring down the government.  Their relationship goes through some serious trials in this book, both characters trying to protect and save the other but not always getting it right.  Bash’s super tech skills lead to a super fun twist when he develops an AI in his own head.  Can an AI experience love?  Who is to say, but it definitely seems like ERIC has developed a special attachment to Freya and adds some tension to their relationship.  The sex is hot, the relationship is anything but fated, and the twist at the end has us flummoxed as to what we will find in the third book!

84 - Eternal Kiss of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost

It has been 60 episodes but we have finally returned to the Night Huntress World by Jeannine Frost.  This book gives us the love story for Kira, a human private eye, and Mencheres, a 4,500 year old master vampire.  It is hard to match our love for Spade and Denise from First Drop of Crimson, but this book did not disappoint.  There was exciting action as Kira and Mencheres try to outsmart his life-long enemy.  But the best parts are the love scenes!  Jeannine pulls her typical trick of heightening the sexual tension between Kira and Mencheres by having their initial love scenes interrupted.  By the time they get to do the deed we are as needy as Kira and also don’t mind that it takes place in an equipment room under Magic Mountain.  You don’t want to miss the shower scene, as usual that one was Calina’s favorite.  Along with the sex, this is a story of forgiving your past so you can have a future.

83 - Her Viking Wolf by Theodora Taylor

We haven’t had great luck with Wolf Shifter books but this book redeemed the subgenre for us.  In the beginning, Chloe’s relationship with Rafe was hard to read about.  Rafe seemed like a class A jerk and I was scared she was going to marry him.  Then Fenris showed up, a time traveling viking with some truly ancient relationship beliefs.  At first it seemed like Fenris was going to be the same type of typical Alpha asshole we have met previously.  He didn’t listen to Chloe, the fated mate he traveled millennia into the future to find, and made some pretty big decisions on her behalf, like bringing her from present day to his Viking past.  But Fenris came around and made an effort to make Chloe feel at home in her new world.  As typical with wolf books, the sex was hot, dirty, and animalistic.  It was heightened by Chole finally finding her sex drive upon meeting Fenris.  Before Fenris, her makeout sessions with Rafe made her feel queasy and she just tried to endure them.  The idea of a modern day black woman being transported thru time to the land of vikings was fascinating to read and think about.  One thing was pretty odd for a wolf book, neither of the main characters ever shifted.  But in the end, Chole found the people and family she was meant to belong to and the love between them blossomed.

82 - Kiss of Fate by Deborah Cooke

FINALLY!  We made it back to the Deborah Cooke Dragonfire series.  Calina has been waiting years for us to get back into this series.  This book holds a special place in Calina’s life and you don’t want to miss our discussion in the podcast about the parallels she sees between Eileen and herself.  With the third eclipse comes the third firestorm and Erik, the leader of the pyre, is in for a surprise.  As quick as he is to push all of his other dragons into consummating their firestorms, he is surprisingly reluctant to do his “duty.”  But his mate, Eileen, is a practical, non nonsense, person and willing to accept the limited sexual encounter he is offering.  The bathtub scene at the quaint English B&B, fresh out of the rain is perfectly written and gives us all the feels.  The whole relationship, just like the firestorm, builds so exquisitely throughout the book until you can’t help but fall victim to the raging inferno!  Did I mention that I fucking love this book?  I have honestly lost track of the number of times I have reread this book alone out of the series.  This episode is absolutely a must listen if you like us at all!  Hopefully it won’t take us years to revisit this favorite series.

81 - The Iron Hunt by Marjorie M. Liu

In season one we read a short story compilation that included a story by Marjorie Liu, it was from this series and we loved the idea so much we talked about wanting to read a whole book.  Why it took us 3 years to make good on our discussion is anyone’s guess.  But here we are.  We are happy to relate that we weren’t disappointed.  This is a fantastic and interesting concept.  We love the tattoos as armor that become actual demons when night falls.  The mystery that Maxine has to solve is wild and requires close reading to follow.  The characters are strong and interesting with their own flaws.  To be fair, this is more of an urban fantasy than a romance novel.  Maxine is already in a relationship with Grant when the books starts and while they have moments of tenderness and intimacy, it is not the focus of the book. We liked this book for the plot and unique story, but it doesn’t give us the dirty, sexy times we love to read.

80 - The Human and Her Vampires by Julie Morgan

In this second book of the Covenant of New Orleans series by Julie Morgan we meet Tawne as she is finding out about the supernatural world that exists right under the surface.  Her best friend, Olivia, found her vampire harem in the first book and now wants to offer Tawne the same life.  At first everything is too good to be true.  There is a group of four vampires interested in taking Tawne home to live with them.  These are some seriously sexy vampires and who wouldn’t be tempted to give this poly lifestyle a try.  The hitch is Tawne needs to try out an experimental serum to change her blood if she wants to be able to feed her vampires.  Just like in the first book the sex is of the charts hot.  Seriously, we needed breaks just to cool down after some of those scenes.  This book we listened to the audio version while we read the e-book for the first in the series.  We are not sure if it was the format, but this book didn’t do it as much for us as the first one.  Tawne’s past baggage and fears of failed relationships get in the way and she almost loses her chance.  This is something many of us can relate to and hopefully learn to overcome.  Luckily, her vamps are ready to give her a second chance.
